Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Today's Poll - Favorite Reincarnated Tune

The winner of yesterday's poll, discontinued song, was...
THE ELEVEN! Lost Sailor came in a close 2nd...

Before I continue, yes, I am new here. I understand that some, if not all, of my ?s have occured before. I also think that its fun to talk about anyhow, especially since my ideas, at least, change from time to time. FOr example, I used to be so tired of Miracle, but recently I have liked it. I missed most Dead shows too... Yes, I am a late comer to the scene. Is it OK if we talk about those shows I missed here?

In the same vein as yesterday's poll, today's poll will be the favorite song that was brought back after a long hiatus...

I am going with Here Comes Sunshine, even though I prefer the earlier versions, I still enjoy the later versions.

Good question. Hard one to answer. Dark Star, Death Don't Have No Mercy, Attics of My Life, New Speedway, Black Throated, hmm.

If I had to pick one, and could eliminate Dark Star since it did get played every few years, I would go with Attics. I thought there was no chance that I would ever hear them do this live and was blown away when I heard them break it out.

My vote is for New Speedway Boogie. If I remember correctly, 22 years in the freezer and came out sounding just about as fresh as when it went in.

have to go with loose Lucy. The crowd was always into this tune even if they were having an off night. real crowd pleaser to say the least.

I so wanted to say Alabama but when they brought it back in 95 it sorely lacked Mydland, and the pace itself was snail-like

New Speedway is a hard one to beat, love that song. But to me the beast to beat is Dark Star followed by Help/Slip with Speedway a game third.

pretty loose criteria for this... let's go with an arbitrary 3 year gap minimum

I can't believe no one's brought up "Box of Rain" yet. Maybe it doesn't seem like as big a deal to those who got on the bus after‘86 because it went right back into fairly regular rotation, but at the time it was absolutely considered to be mother of all breakouts after 13 years in dry dock- the crowd couldn't have been more shocked if they'd whipped out "Viola Lee Blues" or "The Eleven". Truly a jaw dropping moment. I was in the same venue for the “Dark Star” rollout three years later, as well as for the “Ripple” encore at the Cap Center in ’88, and there’s no question the “Box” breakout got the biggest reaction as far as people just completely flipping out.

I'm not sure if the poll's about:

1. Our favorite tune that was reincarnated after a long time away, even if we don't really like the new version.

or

2. Our favorite reincarnation of an old tune.

If it's #1, then I'll go with HCS. If #2, then I'll go with New Speedway Boogie.

I'm going with Loose Lucy also. I like the slower tempo versions much better than the fast ones.

New Speedway. Since it was rejected yesterday (I answered really based on shows I had seen), it fits nicely in here, even though I never got to see it live.

Come on, Cliff. You've contributed a lot of valuable commentary over time, and we appreciate and respect that input. Why so negative? There's nothing in these threads that calls for such disregard.

Get a clue? I spoke respectfully in the hope that you might consider your time and insight might be put to more constructive use than the foolish Partridge Family nonsense, and you reply with the cliche' and insulting remark, "Get a clue." Perhaps you're right. I need to get a clue about how futile it is to try to reach people such as yourself who are hell-bent on pounding out cynicism and animosity.

What? How can you ignore "I Think I Love You". Bobby would have a field day with that sucker.

But the even bigger question: What Monkey's song? I'll go with "Last Train To Clarksville". Or what about "I'm A Believer"? Heck, if Neil Diamond wrote it, it can't be that bad. Too many choices.

NOTE: This post is in no way intended to be disrepectful to anyone. No one loves a good poll as much as I do, just remember to keep your sense of humor about you at all times.

I think I'm Not Your Stepping Stone would have been an excellent cover, plent of chances for some Phil Bombs or an extended Jam break!

Imagine if the Grateful Dead had their own goofy TV show...

Cliff, I can't see kochman being smi2les. Note that in his opening post to this topic he correctly spells "vein" when even many reasonably literate people would have gone with "vain", and he uses "hiatus". Okay, maybe neither of these is a literary tour de force, but if he's smi2les then (1) he's suddenly discovered the King's English, and (2) he's doing a masterful job of reining in his incomprehensible non sequiters and scatological humor. Or do you know something I don't know?

In my heart of hearts (IMHOH?), I think It's All Over Now Baby Blue, but for my official vote I'm going to go with Death Don't Have No Mercy in a vain attempt to push it past New Speedway Boogie.

Death Don't Have No Mercy!

Even if it was only revived for a couple seshes, it was brilliant and eclipsed Dark Star while it lasted.
